A Feast for the Senses - OperaQ's Sensory

Stephen Henry

A very different opera event took place before Easter at the Gallery of Modern Art. To help celebrate its 10th Anniversary, OperaQ made perfect use of GOMA's extraordinary spaces and exhibits as the eye-catching backdrop for performances by OperaQ's and EDC's favourite artists. It was a feast for the ears and eyes. Congratulations to all who were involved in Sensory. Click on the image below to scroll through the gallery of my favourite images from the night.

Bouwman style

Stephen Henry

Michael Bouwman is an artist with a generous heart who has an eclectic style. He makes music whilst living a life that is true to himself and considerate of others; genuine and original he's a mixture of flamboyance and understatement. It was rewarding to capture this and more at our shoot this week. Click on the image of Michael below to scroll through the gallery.

Chookas, Jason Klarwein

Stephen Henry

Jason was in Phedra, the second play I shot for Queensland Theatre way back in 2003. Since then I have enjoyed photographing him in many mainstage performances, as well as directing him in a short film titled, “Nothing Much” - a personal project of mine in 2011. I’ve also watched his prowess as a director and writer evolve; he is a true artist and a trusted friend. He’s currently rehearsing for Once in Royal David’s City for Queensland Theatre and Black Swan State Theatre Company - written by Michael Gow - which is an interesting twist as Michael directed Phedra in 2003. Fourteen years later, it's great to be doing a portrait shoot with him and I wanted the images to pay homage to his theatricality and staunch character. Chookas mate!

Neon Pop 2017

3 February, SUNPAC

The warning on the Neon Pop 2017 Facebook page said it all: Non-attendance may cause serious FOMO.

This popular fusion of Asian pop culture and the Art of Cosplay, opened the BrisAsia Festival and was held at Sunpac for the first time.  A free event for all ages, it brought together fans and followers for a colourful evening of celebration. With live music, dance crews, DJ rave, a light show and marketplace, it was a feast for the eyes and ears, along with the street art, photo wall and other activities.

For one who wasn’t that familiar with cosplay, it was a great experience not just for me but my family who also attended. You can see from the images, there was plenty happening.

Huge congrats to Creative Producer, Joon Kwok and Quentin Leveridge for organising such a great event, ensuring no one, including me, experienced FOMO!

Patience and John

Stephen Henry

I was introduced to this stunning couple when I received a call out of the blue from the groom John enquiring about my work.  We chatted for some time about what he was hoping for on the day and for his beautiful bride-to-be, Patience.  John works on Palm Island so obtaining all the details and having great communications between us was essential to deliver exactly what they wanted for their special day.

The wedding day was full of activity and began with preparations at the picturesque and relaxed Novotel Twin Waters, Sunshine Coast. We popped over to Nambour Court House for the fomalities and returned to Novotel for the heart and soul celebration. The bride and groom arrived in style aboard a launch and were greeted with a traditional Kenyan wedding dance. Warmest congratulations Patience and John and thanks to the team at Novotel Twin Waters.

kismet

Stephen Henry

At some point last year and after a lifetime of ignoring opera as an art form, I realised I loved it. I saw operas beamed from the New York Met to the Dendy Portside (The Tales of Hoffman and The Merry Widow), saw Turandot at Sydney Opera House, Don Giovanni in Melbourne and Don Pasquale in New York @ the Met.

That twelve months went a full circle; started watching operas filmed at the Met and finished by attending one there.

I also married the person who turned me on to it all just before we went to New York too:)

And this year I have started photographing Madama Butterfly for Opera Queensland !

Kismet, it's the nearest thing to a religious experience, and I'm blessed.

Jack

Stephen Henry

It all started very convivially, Jack spots me spotting him, a friendly smile. But it soured when I suggested re-shooting "the centerfold" would result in culturally significant images.

The Truth: He came up to me and said "keep your camera on me and I'll give you shots you don't normally get."

Thanks for the shots Jack, and thanks for being Erskine in Spyforce, I couldn't wear my army disposal shirt enough in 1972 because of you. And thanks for being on the telly, New Years Day 1991, in a cold grey bedsit in Earls Court ;  Sunday Too Far Away made home seem too far away.

BAPFF and APSA are a blast!!!!!!!
